Walking into a gym for the first time can feel a little like stepping onto another planet—there are cables, levers, padded seats, stacks of weights, and a lot of people who seem to know exactly what they’re doing.
But here’s the thing: everyone starts somewhere.
And one of the best places to start if you’re new to strength training? Selectorized machines.
What Are Selectorized Machines?
Selectorized machines are those weight machines you’ll find around most gyms with a stack of weights and a pin you use to “select” your resistance level. Each machine is designed to target a specific muscle group—like your chest, legs, back, or arms—and guides your movement in a controlled path.
In other words, they’re a beginner’s best friend when it comes to learning how to use exercise equipment safely and effectively.
Why Start Here?
✔️ Stability – Because the machine guides your motion, it helps reduce the risk of injury from improper form.
✔️ Focus – You can really zero in on one muscle group at a time.
✔️ Confidence – No need to worry about balancing weights or setting up complex equipment.
How to Use Selectorized Machines Effectively
Each machine usually has a diagram showing which muscle it works and how to use it. But if you’re unsure? That’s exactly what Equipment Orientations are for (more on that in a sec!).
When using selectorized machines, a good starting place is:
✅ 2–3 sets of 8–15 repetitions (reps).
- A rep is one full movement (like one leg press).
- A set is a group of reps (for example, 12 leg presses in a row = 1 set).
Start with lighter weight so you can focus on form first, and add more resistance as you get stronger and more comfortable.
Bonus Tips:
- Move slowly and with control—no need to rush through reps.
- Exhale on the exertion (the hard part!), like when you push or lift.
- Wipe down equipment after use and adjust the seat or pads to fit your body.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help—we love helping people feel confident here.
Not Sure Where to Begin?
If you’re a current Greater Austin YMCA member, you can schedule a free Equipment Orientation with a team member (like me!) to walk through how to use the machines, how to adjust them for your body, and how to build a workout you actually enjoy.
If you’re not local to Austin or are a member elsewhere, check in with your home gym—most have similar intro sessions that can be incredibly helpful.
Strength training doesn’t have to be complicated or intimidating. Selectorized machines are an excellent way to build a foundation, especially if you’re just starting out or getting back into a routine. And remember, there’s no “right” way to begin—just the way that gets you moving.
